Reserve Service Members Education and Training

OPTION 1: TUITION ASSISTANCE FOR RESERVE SERVICE MEMBERS:

Active Duty members of the Selective Reserves are eligible for tuition assistance. However each of the Armed Forces determines how to administer their own Tuition Assistance (TA). In addition each state may offer its National Guard service members state funded education incentives based on state guidelines and eligibility

ARMY NATIONAL GUARD: The Army National Guard allows 100% tuition assistance not to exceed $250 per semester hour, up to $4,500 annually. Additionally, many states offer additional education benefits for members of their National Guard (National Guard is controlled –for the most part–by the individual States, not the Federal Government, so benefits can vary widely from state-to-state).

AIR NATIONAL GUARD: The Air National Guard offers 100% tuition assistance not to exceed $250.00 per semester hour, or $166 per quarter hour, up to $1,000 annually. Additionally, many states offer additional education benefits for members of their National Guard (National Guard is controlled –for the most part–by the individual States, not the Federal Government, so benefits can vary widely from state-to-state).

AIR FORCE RESERVES: The Air Force Reserves give 100% Tuition Assistance for undergraduate degree programs. TA is limited to $250 per semester hour, or $166.67 per quarter hour, up to $4,500 annually.

ARMY RESERVES: The Army Reserves offers 100% TA for both undergraduate and graduate degrees. TA cannot exceed $250 per semester hour, or $166.67 per quarter hour, up to $4,500 annually.
COAST GUARD RESERVES: The Coast Guard Reserves offer TA for both undergraduate and graduate degrees. TA cannot exceed $250 per semester hour, or $166.67 per quarter hour up to $4,500 annually.

NAVY RESERVES AND MARINE CORPS RESERVES: The Navy and Marine Corps Reserves do not offer a Tuition Assistance Program, at present. However, (for all of the reserve service), military members who are called to active duty under Title 10 — Federal Call up — get the same TA benefits as their active duty counterparts. That means, for example, that a Reserve Marine, called to active duty, would be eligible for the Marine Corps Active Duty Tuition Assistance Program.

* DISCLAIMER: Please note these totals may change, and it is the responsibility of the student to confirm their eligibility and allowances under the military education programs *

USING TUITION ASSISTANCE AS A RESERVE SERVICE MEMBER AT IIEI:

Step One: Contact Your Education Center Representative

Depending on your service branch and history, your Education Center representative will be able to determine your eligibility and help you complete the necessary procedure and forms. To find your nearest service branch education center, please contact your assigned base or search DANTES Directory of Education Centers online at:
http://www.dantes.doded.mil/dantes_web/apps/edcenters/edcentersearch.asp?Flag=True

Step Two: Select Your Tuition Assistance Program, and Complete the Required Enrollment Forms

Each service branch has its own enrollment forms for the Reserve Tuition Assistance Programs offered, and not all branches offer tuition assistance for reserve troops. Your Education center Representative will be able to direct you to the various applications, many of which are available online with registration at the various websites. The most current links to general information are available on Military.com, and are listed below:

• Reserve Education Assistance Program (REAP)
• Army Voluntary Education Programs
• Navy Voluntary Education Programs
• Air Force Voluntary Education Programs
• Marine Corps Voluntary Education Programs
• Coast Guard Voluntary Education Programs

Step Three: Indicate IIEI as Your Primary Institution

When selecting your primary civilian institution, be sure to indicate the International Import-Export Institute. IIEI is listed online in the DANTES Catalog of Approved Institutions, or you may locate us by searching for schools based in Phoenix, Arizona.

By indicating IIEI as your primary institution, it allows your TA enrollment information to be forwarded to the Institute for billing and registration purposes. Be sure to contact your Education Center Representative or a member of IIEI’s Administration at 800-474-8013 if you encounter any problems in registering your TA benefits with IIEI.

Step Four: Choose Your Program or Course of Study to Enroll in Class

If you have not already done so, students should contact one of the Institute’s friendly Academic Advisors or Degree Counselors to receive additional information regarding any of IIEI’s available programs or courses. Advisors and Counselors will guide you through the paperwork, answer questions, and finalize all enrollments.

Additionally, a select set of advisors and counselors have additional clearance and resources to work with your Education Center Representatives to make the entire registration process simple for students new to military education benefits. Please contact your Advisor or Counselor to determine what program or course is right for you, and how your TA benefits can cover the cost of your continuing education or training.

Step Five: Receive Your Course Materials and Start Class

Once you have chosen your course or program and enrolled with your assigned Advisor or Counselor, IIEI’s Administration staff will process and finalize your registration. Students will receive a registration confirmation email that guarantees their spot in the upcoming courses, and information on how to order any necessary course materials or supplies.

Prior to class starting, students will receive an online or telephone tutorial which explains what is expected of them in the classroom and how to navigate the online environment. Students may contact their Advisor or Counselor for any additional assistance before, during, or after their course.

OPTION 2: THE MONTGOMERY G.I. BILL FOR RESERVE SERVICE MEMBERS:

The program is for members of the Selected Reserve of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, and the Army and Air National Guard. “Selected Reserves” means those individuals who are drilling a minimum of one weekend per month, and two weeks per year. This excludes inactive reserves.
You are eligible for the SRMGIB if you meet the following requirements:
• Six-Year Selected Reserve Obligation. You must have a six-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve. If you’re an officer, you must agree to serve six years in addition to your current obligation.
• Complete Your IADT (Initial Active Duty for Training). In most cases, this means basic training and military job training school.
• Maintain Selected Reserve Status. Serve in a drilling Selected Reserve unit and remain in good standing.
• Completed High School. You must have obtained a high school diploma or equivalency certificate before you apply for benefits. Completing 12 hours toward a college degree before you apply for benefits also meets this requirement.
